Every week a new "AI SEO" tool promises to rank your WordPress site on autopilot. Some are genuinely useful. Some are repackaged junk with a beautiful landing page. And a few are outright scams. The frustrating part: the marketing looks identical for all three.

1. Search the tool's name + "reddit"

Reddit is where marketing goes to die. Search [tool name] reddit and read actual user threads, not the tool's own subreddit. Look for patterns: billing complaints, results that never materialise, affiliate shills getting called out. One angry user means nothing; a pattern means everything.

2. Read the 1-star reviews first

On Trustpilot and similar sites, skip the 5-star wall (easily bought) and read the 1-star reviews. You're looking for specific complaints — "charged after cancelling", "support vanished", "rankings dropped" — rather than vague grumbling. Specifics from multiple unrelated users are the strongest signal there is.

3. Ask what it actually does — mechanically

Real tools can explain their mechanism: "we analyse X and generate Y." Scammy tools describe outcomes ("AI-powered rankings!") but go vague on mechanism. If you can't work out what the tool concretely does to your site after reading its whole homepage, that's your answer.

4. Beware the "vibe SEO" pitch

Current red flags: promises of effortless rankings from AI-generated content at scale, screenshots of traffic graphs with no verifiable site, countdown-timer pricing, and heavy promotion through affiliates who only ever say nice things. SEO has no autopilot; anyone selling one is selling to you, not for you.

5. Check for a real company

Who runs it? Is there a real founder with a history, a company address, a support channel with humans? A tool that hides its operators is planning for the day you want a refund.
