Professional product photography with models costs hundreds of dollars per shot. On a recent WP AI Success Hub live call, we took a member's product photo — a wearable beauty device — and put it on a model-quality person using ChatGPT's image editing, live on screen. Total cost: part of a ChatGPT subscription she already had.
The basic workflow
- Upload a clear photo of your actual product to ChatGPT
- Describe the shot you want: "Show this glove being worn by a woman in her 50s with well-groomed hands, soft natural lighting, clean neutral background, product photography style"
- Let it generate, then iterate — this is the part people skip
Expect to go back and forth — that's the skill
The first result is rarely right. On our live call the initial images had the hand at an impossible angle — AI image tools still get anatomy wrong, especially hands. The fix isn't starting over; it's specific corrections: "rotate the hand so the palm faces down", "the fingers should be relaxed, not spread". Each round gets closer. As Tony put it on the call: all that back and forth is how you learn the language.
Prompts that work for product shots
- Name the demographic and context: "a woman in her 50s applying it as part of an evening routine"
- Specify lighting and style: "soft window light, high-end skincare ad style"
- Protect the product: "keep the product exactly as shown in the reference photo — same colours, same shape, same branding"
- Fix one thing per iteration — batched corrections confuse it
Check before you publish
Zoom in on hands, edges, and any text or branding on the product — those are where AI images give themselves away. And be straightforward in how you use them: AI-generated lifestyle imagery is fine; implying a fake customer photo is not.
