Buying an aged domain — one with existing history and backlinks — can give a new website a head start. It can also hand you someone else's spam problem. The difference is entirely in the research you do before paying.

1. Walk through its past on the Wayback Machine
Go to web.archive.org and step through the domain's history year by year. You're looking for two things: what the site used to be about (relevant to your plans?), and any ugly chapters — casino pages, pharma spam, a sudden switch to a foreign language. A domain that spent two years as a pill-spam site is a hard pass no matter how good its metrics look.
2. Check the backlinks, not just the score
Headline metrics like DA/DR are easy to inflate. Open the actual backlink list: are the links from real sites in a relevant topic, or from directories and link farms? A handful of genuine links from real websites beats a thousand junk ones. Watch the anchor text too — if it's all commercial keywords in another language, walk away.
3. Look at spam scores — as a smoke alarm, not a verdict
Tools like Spamzilla aggregate domain history, spam signals, and backlink data specifically for aged-domain hunting, and marketplaces like GoDaddy Auctions let you cross-check what's actually for sale. A high spam score means dig deeper; a low one doesn't mean safe — it means keep checking.
4. Confirm Google hasn't given up on it
Search site:thedomain.com in Google. If a domain with supposed authority has zero pages indexed, find out why before buying — it may have been deindexed, which can be a long road back.
5. Check the boring details
- DNS and nameserver history — lots of rapid changes can signal a domain that's been passed between spammers
- Trademark risk — don't buy someone's brand name and inherit their lawyers
- Renewal price — some TLDs and premium domains renew at painful rates
